Question of the Week : from IIT-JEE 2009/Physics /... A ball is dropped from a height of 20 m above the surface of water in a lake. The refractive index of water is 4/3. A fish inside the lake, in the line of fall of the ball, is looking at the ball. At an instant when the ball is 12.8 m above the water surface, the fish sees the speed of the ball as (Take g = 10 ms–2) (a)...

Continuing with our discussion on Bernoulli’s theorem, we take a look at some of the previous questions asked in the Physics paper of IIT-JEE dealing with the same.We would also be trying to find a pattern in the theoretical aspects of the said questions. [ Answers in the next post dealing with Bernoulli's theorem ]

*1] Water from a tap emerges vertically downwards with an initial speed of 1.0m/s.The cross sectional area of tap is 10^{-4}m^2.Assume that the pressure is constant throughout the stream of water and that the flow is steady. The cross-sectional area of stream 0.15m below the tap is..  [ IIT-JEE 1998 ]

*2] A glass tube of uniform internal radius [ r ] has a valve separating the two identical ends.Initially, the valve is in a tightly closed position.End 1 has a hemispherical soap bubble of radius r.End 2 has sub-hemispherical soap bubble as shown. What happens after opening the valve ?  [ IIT-JEE 2008 ]

*3 ] A non-viscous liquid of constant density 1000 kg/m^3flows in stream line motion along a tube of variable cross-section.The tube is kept inclined in the vertical plain as shown. The area of cross-section of the tube at two points P and Q at heights of 2m and 5m are respectively 4x10^{-3}m^2 and 8 x10^{-3}m^2 .Find the work done per unit volume by the pressure and the gravity forces as the fluid flows from point P t0 Q.  [ IIT-JEE 1997 ]

*4 ] A liquid of density 9ookg/m^3is filled in a cylindrical tank of upper radius 0.9m and lower radius 0.3m.A capillary tube of length l is attached at the bottom of the tank as shown. The capillary has outer radius 0.002m and inner radius a.When pressure p is applied at the top of the tank volume, flow rate of the liquid is 8x10^{-6}m^3/s and if capillary tube is detached, the liquid comes out from the tank with a velocity 10m/s.Determine the coefficient of viscosity of the liquid ?        [ IIT-JEE 2003 ]

Category : CBSE +2 Physics, IIT-JEE Physics, NCERT Physics

If the resultant of all the external forces acting on a system of particles is zero, then from an inertial frame, one can surely say that

A] linear momentum of the system does not change in time

B] kinetic energy of the system does not change in time

C] angular momentum of the system does not change in time

D] potential energy of the system does not change in time.

Question of the Week : Answer to IIT-JEE Physics 2009/Optics

Category : CBSE +2 Physics, IIT-JEE Physics

Given below is the answer to Optics question from IIT-JEE Physics paper 2009

V is taken by calculating the root of  2 x 10 x [ 20 - 12.8 ] which gives  12 m/s…. now,

Considering  the diffraction at the water surface,

v/u2  = u/u1  or  dv/dt  = u2/u1 x dv/dt     i.e,  dv/dt  = 4/3 x 12 = 16 m/s.

Hence,option C is correct.

4/3 is the refractive index

4/3 is the refractive index

Welcome to learn PHYSICS the easiest way on the web and much much more

Category : CBSE +2 Physics, Easy Physics, IIT-JEE Physics, NCERT Physics

Learning Physics is often considered a tough nut to crack, especially as it involves two basic steps..that is understanding a theoritical concept, and then applying it in the problem / workout at hand. The issue here is,not only in understanding the concept, but the factual application of the principle involved in the a] right manner b] right level and the c] right context.Hence, even for a studious person, one or all of the above  factors is bound to go wrong.

Welcome to PHYSICSMYND, the web resource which will enable you to tackle all the physics learning related issues you will probably encounter .Eventhough the content level would be mainly aimed at IIT-JEE PHYSICS EXAM done in India, it would be equally suitable for a student following any University level Physics classes including the International Cambridge Examinations.

Last, but not least this site would also have  info feeds on path breaking Science & Technology Applications with special emphasis on the physics of  those applications.
